In a surgical operation, internal organs, bones and tissues are retracted through the opening created by incision. The holding back of body tissue is called “surgical retraction”. Retractors are instrument used to hold the incision open and expose the surgical site. Kinds and size of retractors varies but the use of it depends on the type of surgical procedure to be performed. The small kinds are handheld instruments use to retract skin and subcutaneous tissue in shallow surgical site. The larger ones are heavier use to retract tissue and organs of deep surgical sites. Each surgical retractor has its own specific properties depending on how it was designed for use. Hand held retractors are prepared, held in place and kept by surgical assistant during and after the surgical operation.
Self-Retaining Retractors Self-retaining retractors can hold the tissue apart and retain it in place, thus assistant is not required. Rib spreader falls on this category for it holds the ribs apart during the abdominal operation. Self-retaining retractors maybe used in concurrence with hand-held retractors. This reactor consists of flexible retractor paddles. It is made up of rigid frame with two interlocking halves laid longitudinally over a cut opening. Knee Retractors This is composed of a set of 5 tissue and bone retractors used for precise cuts exposure of distal femur and proximal tibia. These stainless retractors are used to shield ligaments during total knee implant operation.
