Surgical scissors are one of the surgical instruments needed for orthopedic surgical operations. Prior of the operation it is necessary that they are clean, tested, check for functionality and assembled according to an accurate and detailed proper arrangement. Surgical scissors belongs to handheld types of orthopedic instruments and varies in functions, designs, sizes and processing requirements.
Scissors are tools used to cut different types of objects, especially for cutting paper. A pair of scissors is a pair of elongated members pivotally attached together by a pivot pin. Pair of cover members is secured to finger apertures of the elongated members. Each of the elongated members has a cutting blade at one end of it and a handle member at another end of it. Each handle member has a finger aperture for receiving and insertion of fingers.
There are different types of orthopedic surgical scissors, curved scissors generally used to cut and dissect tissue, straight scissors used for cutting sutures and tissue when a smooth, straight desired cut—such as a damaged nerve or blood vessel and scissors used for probing, dissecting, and spreading tissue. Although surgical scissors were not design to cut paper or tubing, bandage scissor can be use for this reason. General scissors or operating scissors are use for cutting suture and gauze. The heavier type are used for cutting fine wire sutures and can be identified by their serrated, angular blades with a groove for holding the wire as it is being cut. The operating scissors either dull or sharp are good for cutting through tissue and muscle. This precisely cuts and cleans the cut parts with a minimum distortion. Its usual length is 115 mm. The blunt orthopedic surgical scissors are an excellent instrument used for all dissection work. The iris scissors are 115 mm in length and are sharp pointed that are available either of curved or angular cutting blades. High precise finger tip control scissors are ideal for delicate micro-dissection work.
Orthopedic surgical scissors are high precision made of stainless steel cutting instrument developed to the highest specifications and can be sterilized in autoclaved many times before corrosion be seen. The sharper the edges are, the greater the chances of corrosion but can be minimized by storing it after rinsing with deionized neutral pH water and stored then in dry place. Life span of the surgical scissor depends on types of materials are being cut and nature on how it is stored.
